Athleisure for the Office: A Guide for India
How to wear comfortable athletic clothing to work and still look put together.

Athleisure works at the office when it looks deliberate: clean, well-fitting pieces in neutral colours, with no loud logos, combined with one or two smarter items such as a collared overshirt, chinos or leather trainers. In India, choose breathable fabrics for the commute and keep a layer for air-conditioned offices.
Why athleisure moved into the office
Hybrid work, long commutes and the habit of fitting a workout around the day have all made comfortable clothing more acceptable at work, especially in startups, creative fields and tech. The line between gym clothes and office clothes is about how the pieces look, not what they are made for.
What works, and what does not
- Works: plain heavyweight T-shirts, polo shirts, tapered joggers in smooth fabrics, crew-neck sweatshirts, zip jackets, clean white or black trainers.
- Usually does not: anything shiny or see-through, large logos, faded or stretched pieces, running shorts and slides.
- Depends on your office: hoodies and leggings. Read the room before you try them.
Five rules for looking sharp
- Fit first. A slightly tailored fit looks intentional. See our guide to how athletic clothing should fit.
- Stick to neutrals. Black, navy, grey, white, olive and beige look calmer and mix easily.
- Choose fabric with structure. Heavier cotton holds its shape and does not cling. Our guide to GSM and heavyweight cotton explains why.
- Mix in one smart piece. An overshirt, chinos or a structured jacket turns a casual outfit into a work one.
- Keep everything fresh. Pilled, faded or stretched clothing reads as gym wear, even if it is not.
Outfits for Indian offices
- Hot commute, cold office: a breathable T-shirt and tapered joggers for the journey, with a crew-neck sweatshirt or zip jacket in your bag for the air-conditioning.
- Client meeting: a plain polo or heavyweight T-shirt, chinos, an unstructured blazer or overshirt and clean leather trainers.
- Gym before or after work: joggers and a T-shirt that work in both places, with a quick-dry top and fresh socks packed separately for the workout.
- Monsoon days: dark, quick-drying bottoms and a light water-resistant layer that does not look like sportswear.
